Carter Lyons ’97, co-CEO of Two Sigma Investment Management, spoke at this October’s Donald M. Gruhn ’49 Distinguished Finance Speaker Series.

Over 300 faculty, students and staff gathered in Baker Hall at the Zoellner Arts Center to see Lyons, led by moderator Professor McKay Price, department chair of the Perella Department of Finance, discuss how Two Sigma uses a variety of technological methods, including AI, machine learning, and distributed computing, for its trading strategies.

“Talking about AI today is like talking about the internet 30 years ago,” said Lyons. “It’s here to stay. Now, it’s about how do you identify, not just the overall strategic shift, but the tactical shifts underneath. Who are the winners and the losers and how can you invest with them? How can you join them as employees?”

Besides being a member of Lehigh Business’ Center for Financial Services Advisory Council for the last five years, Lyons has come on campus to speak to the FIN 382 class.

“Get out of your comfort zone,” Lyons urged students in Baker Hall. “Be intellectually curious for the rest of your life.” Lyons said, when they go on interviews they should lean into that trait. “It’s relatively easy to identify the people who are intellectually curious and those are the type of people I want to spend time with.”
