Overview
The Lehigh University Investment Management Group is the bridge to the financial markets at Lehigh University. The goals of the Investment Management Group are to further the understanding of the financial markets and finance industry for all students involved.
We seek to achieve these objectives through the management of our three investment portfolios: the Dreyfus Portfolio, the Rights Portfolio, and the FSL Value Portfolio. Each portfolio invests real money and is entirely student run. In addition to the portfolios, the group actively provides for interactions with members of the finance and Wall Street communities.
A Great Opportunity
The Investment Management Group is a powerful learning opportunity for students. Very few Universities offer real money investment opportunities. Our portfolios are arranged to mimic challenges that a real financial advisor would see. Each portfolio builds experiences so that students who have matriculated through all the portfolios will have a well rounded, and deep understanding of portfolio management challenges.
Portfolios
What is The Dreyfus Portfolio?
Funded in 1962, the Dreyfus Portfolio is the flagship student run investment fund at Lehigh University. The Dreyfus Portfolio provides real investing experience for selected students with an interviewing process often rivaling the same difficulty level of investment banking positions. With a strong understanding of the financial markets, these students are typically juniors, seniors, and graduate students. This portfolio is considered the strongest gateway to the financial markets at Lehigh University. Managers of the portfolio have been consistently recruited for top positions at leading financial firms.
Learning Goals
- Employ complex investment strategies
- Strict performance and compliance review
- Learn basic technical analysis
- Manage and oversee several portfolios
- Financial advisor responsibility ~ proxy voting
Who is on Dreyfus?
An invitation only portfolio, students that are members of the Dreyfus Portfolio have excelled at understanding the classroom theory, as well as demonstrated the ability to apply these practices in the real world. The Dreyfus Portfolio oversees the entire Investment Management Group, leads compliance reviews for all portfolios and manages their recruitment. Students are expected to follow a sector, provide weekly updates, pitch and research all investment opportunities discussed by the group.
What is The Rights Portfolio?
Overseen by the Investment Management Group Executive Board, the Rights Portfolio is a stepping stone for general members to be exposed to real world investing. The portfolio is an equity based long only portfolio and does not engage in more complex strategies such as short selling or derivatives. General meetings are held weekly in the Financial Services Lab in the Rauch Business Center.
Learning Goals
- Learn the basics of valuing a company/stock
- Learn about bench marking and general performance metrics
- Learn how to present and pitch investments.
- Learn about career opportunities in Finance.
- Understand and employ finance lingo with peers
Who is on Rights?
The weekly general meetings are open to any individual with the desire and drive to learn about the capital markets and provide input. During part of each the group is divided into coverage sectors and are led by a sector lead that is appointed by the Executive Board from the general student group.
The establishment of The Peter Thompson International Investment Portfolio was made possible by a gift to the College of Business in honor of alumnus Peter Thompson, Class of 1950, the former director of exporting for Campbell Soup Company. The primary purpose of the portfolio is to provide a framework within which undergraduates are exposed to an experiential learning activity in International Markets and Investments; the portfolio started with an initial value of $10,000 on January 1, 1995.
The course is designed to give students an opportunity to gain hands-on knowledge and understanding of the increasingly interconnected global economy that will be of value to them in securing their first jobs and throughout their careers and lives. Emphasis is placed on researching the economies of foreign countries, their financial markets, and the opportunities for foreign portfolio investors.
The Thompson Portfolio benefits Lehigh students in several ways. It enhances the international and experiential learning dimensions of the curriculum and adds to the global dimension of the Lehigh Business undergraduate program. The portfolio helps to enable the College to meet the challenge of educating future leaders in the new global business environment.
