Our program is designed for future researchers and educators who want to contribute to the development and application of knowledge in economics
The Lehigh Ph.D. in Business and Economics program includes core coursework in economic theory and econometrics in the first year of study, followed by field course sequences in the second year. Students must complete both the core courses and field sequences before taking additional electives.
During the second year students will meet with the Ph.D. Director and decide on a primary field of specialization and pass a field examination. Students will be granted secondary fields in four other areas upon successful completion of the relevant coursework. Subject to the approval of the Ph.D. Director, students may pursue a secondary field in an area that is not supported by formal coursework in the Department of Economics through either directed readings, or courses offered in other departments. In the third year of study, students may take additional electives and will receive credit for pursing their third year research paper requirement. The fourth year of study consists primarily of dissertation research.
Students are expected to earn a B or better for all coursework attempted at Lehigh. Furthermore, those students with teaching or research stipends are expected to maintain a full-time load of nine credit hours and attend all Department of Economics research seminars.
