Summer 2019 Internship: Sales & Trading Intern, Macquarie Group

“I interned at Macquarie Group, an investment bank headquartered in Sydney, Australia, in the commodities and global markets (sales & trading) division in New York City. I rotated between three groups over the course of the summer: equity electronic trading, equity research sales, and commodities financing.

On the equity trading desk, I created Excel models and macros to increase trader productivity. In equity research sales, I analyzed client survey results and created reports to increase sales commissions. Lastly, in commodities financing, I researched the renewable fuels market and analyzed live data to create supply and demand forecasts and make market price projections.”

Value derived from internship experience:

“Working on the equities trading floor this summer was a very exciting experience. I was immersed in the markets every day, which increased my knowledge of the current political and economic landscape. I took advantage of the skills I learned from my financial modeling course to turn out various work products that provided value for senior people on the floor. Commodities financing allowed me to dive into research and data, and use that knowledge to conduct deep level analysis. I was then able to lead an hour long meeting with senior bankers where I presented an eight slide price projection pitch—sharpening my skills at synthesizing complex information and organizing a concise and clear work product.

In addition to the benefits of applying knowledge learned from my classes to a real work environment, one of the most significant aspects of my internship was the shadowing process. I was able to speak in depth with a wide variety of professionals with different responsibilities and levels of experience. Shadowing was a great start to developing a network of banking professionals and advisors in New York.”

Annika’s career goals:

“My sales & trading internship this summer helped me rethink my priorities, and after discussions with my college professors, I was encouraged to pursue a different path. I realized that I want my first full time job experience to be one that challenges my writing, verbal, and analytical abilities. I was able to use my experience at Macquarie Group this summer and my newly gained network as a springboard to change my career path within the company. Instead of continuing in sales & trading, I will be working on the investment banking side at Macquarie Capital, where I will take a position as an analyst on the Debt Capital Markets Team. I believe that the fast deal flow in debt capital markets will provide me with a valuable learning experience and will be a solid building block for the rest of my career.”
