FILM SCREENING: Counted Out

Screening of the movie Counted Out on March 26 at 6:30 p.m. in Packard Lab, co-sponsored by all five colleges, open to the public, with a brief interdisciplinary discussion panel following the film.

About the Film:

Counted Out investigates the biggest crises of our time through an unexpected lens: math.

In our current information economy, math is everywhere. The people we date, the news we see, the influence of our votes, the candidates who win elections, the education we have access to, the jobs we get—all of it is underwritten by an invisible layer of math that few of us understand, or even notice.

But whether we know it or not, our numeric literacy—whether we can speak the language of math—is a critical determinant of social and economic power.

Through a mosaic of personal stories, expert interviews, and scenes of math transformation in action, Counted Out shows what’s at risk if we keep the status quo. Do we want an America in which most of us don’t consider ourselves “math people”? Where math proficiency goes down as students grow up? Or do we want a country where everyone can understand the math that undergirds our society—and can help shape it?

Large Language Models Workshop Jan 12-13, 2026

Challenges & Opportunities for Real World Applications of Foundation Models

Open to Lehigh University faculty, post-docs and graduate students. Registration required by: 12.31.25

AI transformation, large language models (LLMs) and other foundation models have become central to diverse applications, spanning natural language processing to computer vision. These models, with their immense potential, are revolutionizing research and society but their application in real-world settings poses some challenges. This workshop explores the lessons learnt from deployment of such models in the domains of robotics, human-centric applications, cyber physical systems, healthcare and finance, as well as discussing techniques that have been explored to adapt foundation models so that they can be ready for real deployments in these domains.

Speakers include:

Qingyu Chen, Yale School of MedicineZhe Chen, Jefferson Hospital/LVHNGeorge Gui, Columbia UniversityStefano Puntoni, University of PennsylvaniaMark Riedl, Georgia TechMatthias Scheutz, Tufts UniversityMore detailed information and updates on the workshop can be found on the workshop website: GO.LEHIGH.EDU/LLMWORKSHOP

University Town Hall for the First-Year Rossin Experiences (FYRE)

Dear faculty and staff colleagues,

You are invited to join a University-wide Town Hall to hear first-hand about the plans for the new First-Year Rossin Experience (FYRE).

FYRE is the College of Engineering's new program for the first year in engineering, with a pilot currently underway. FYRE will provide hands-on learning experiences to help deepen the connections between the core competencies learned in the first year and the engineering disciplines. The program will also provide students with perspective about the interdisciplinary nature of engineering, by showing them how disciplines collaborate to find solutions to some of our biggest societal challenges. Importantly, the program recognizes that students need to understand the broader context in which they provide solutions - the human, social, ethical, global and economic contexts that will help them be better, future ready engineers.

In this Town Hall, the current FYRE Steering Committee will provide an overview of what has been piloted so far, and what is being planned for Spring 2026 and beyond. The conversation will be followed by a Q & A session over lunch. Please use the following link to RSVP.
