Program Overview

As a manager, you are responsible for regularly making decisions that affect your company’s financial performance. Understanding the financial implications of those decisions can have a dramatic effect on the bottom line, benefiting not just your team, business unit, and organization, but also your career. 

This program is designed to help you gain a solid foundation in finance and accounting principles. It will also provide a framework for interpreting and leveraging financial data and information. You will return to your organization with the skill set and knowledge to analyze and utilize financial data and participate in making key business decisions.

Program Outline

Day 1: Day 2:

Morning: Introduction to Finance & Accounting Concepts

  • Basic accounting and financial principles, terms, and concepts
  • The role of accounting and review of assumptions and their financial impact on decision-making
  • Overview of financial statements and recording of transactions

Morning: Financial Performance Measurement

  • Review of various financial ratios to increase understanding of financial performance and how to evaluate profitability, liquidity, solvency, and operational efficiency
  • Review actual company performance and historical trends using financial ratio analysis to compare results across industries
  • Benchmark the financial performance of companies versus competitors by analyzing and interpreting financial information

Afternoon: Financial Statement Analysis

  • In-depth review of the Income Statement (P&L), Balance Sheet, and Statement of Cash Flows and how they function together
  • Analyze line items of the financial statements and go more in-depth on transaction flow
  • Utilize financial statements to evaluate financial performance
  • Review of actual financial statements of organizations in different industries

Afternoon: Forecasting & Budget Preparation

  • Review of the forecasting and budgeting process to project future revenues, expenses, and cash flow
  • Identify the impact of assumptions in the forecasting and budgeting process
  • Understand how to evaluate investment decisions in capital project planning (Net Present Value/Internal Rate of Return)
  • Review best practices in developing an effective budget, and identify and review common problems that occur in the process

Faculty

Gregg Henry has over 20 years of experience working in a variety of financial management roles across a diverse set of industries and organizations. He has worked in higher education and for publicly and privately held manufacturing and distribution companies and has seen the numerous aspects of financial management from different perspectives. Gregg has an undergraduate degree in Business Logistics from Penn State University and an MBA from Lehigh University.
